BACKGROUND

CONSTRUCTED IN 1949, THE SALINAS MUNICIPAL POOL HAS CONTINUOUSLY SERVED THE DIVERSE POPULATION OF THE SALINAS VALLEY AND BEYOND FOR OVER 50 YEARS. WITH ONLY MINOR IMPROVEMENTS AND MINIMAL PRESERVATION SINCE ITS CONCEPTION, THIS BUILDING IS IN A MAJOR STATE OF DISREPAIR. BEING THE ONLY PUBLIC SWIMMING FACILITY IN THE GREATER SALINAS AREA, THE CURRENT MUNICIPAL POOL IS STRUGGLING TO SERVE A POPULATION OF 148,400 AND MATCH THE DEMANDS OF YOUTH IN THE AREA. CURRENTLY THE POOL SERVES 46,000 PARTICIPANTS A YEAR AND HAS WAITING LISTS FOR MANY OF THEIR PROGRAMS. THE CITY'S ABILITY TO PROVIDE FOR THE COMMUNITY IS HAMPERED BY THE CURRENT CONDITION OF THE EXISTING FACILITY. IN ITS PRESENT STATE THE MUNICIPAL POOL CANNOT ACCOMMODATE THE GROWTH THAT SALINAS IS CURRENTLY EXPERIENCING.

DIVING INTO THE FUTURE

With the building of a new municipal aquatic center comes the recognition that not only the youth of Salinas, but all of its citizens, deserve a new and expanded facility. Aspiring athletes should have adequate facilities to excel to their full potential, and after-school recreation programs should be able to cover a diverse range safe and supervised activities to meet a variety of individual interests and needs. The project's value is found in the indiscriminate benefits it will provide to individuals of all backgrounds and ages, improving Salinas' youth services and quality of life and promoting values of health, sportsmanship, community and excellence.

SALINAS COMMUNITY POOL FOUNDATION

The Salinas Community Pool Foundation is a non-profit organization comprised of a group committed community leaders. The SCPF, in partnership with the City of Salinas, is aiming to make possible the building of a new municipal aquatic center with the goal of improving quality of life, community health, youth development and the economic vitality of Salinas. SCPF is seeking support from local businesses, community leaders and charitable foundations to make the dream of constructing a new municipal aquatic center a reality.
